Leigh, Mike

Leigh, Mike
   b. 1943
   Film-maker
Born in 1943, Leigh has been a writer and director for television, theatre and film. He trained at RADA and worked for a year as an assistant director at the Royal Shakespeare Company. He is noted for curiously light and bitter comedies of lower-middle and working-class manners and aspirations, in films such as High Hopes (1989), Life is Sweet (1990), Naked (1993), Secrets and Lies (1996) and Career Girls (1997). Leigh achieved celebrity in the 1970s with a series of television dramas, most famous of which was Abigail’s Party, an excruciating and excoriating satire on upwardly mobile class pretensions, starring his then wife Alison Steadman.
